What is Confirmation of Payee?
Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that adds a layer of protection for payments made to an individual or business’ BSB and account number.
It checks the account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank and lets you know whether it’s a match.
This can:
- help you make informed decisions before you make a payment
- help reduce the risk of scams or making a mistaken payment.

When you make most payments to a BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee checks the details you enter against the account name, BSB and account number held by the recipient’s bank and gives you a match outcome.
That helps you decide what you want to do next – and gives you more confidence that the money you’re paying is going to where you intend it to.
Confirmation of Payee will also be used by any business or person making a payment to you, as the payment details entered will be compared to the account details we hold for you.
Please note: As we are yet to initiate this service, if someone is paying you, the match outcome may show an error message similar too - “We could not confirm the account name match”. This just means that the Payer’s Financial Institution has not been able to match on the account name however payment can still be made.
