What is Confirmation of Payee?
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is an industry-wide service that adds an extra layer of protection for payments made to an individual or business’ BSB and Account number. It confirms the details you have entered match those held by the recipient's bank.
This can help you:
- confirm an account belongs to who you want to pay
- avoid scams or mistaken payments.
Helping protect your money.
Verify before you pay
Helps avoid mistakes
More confidence
How it works.
- When you use Internet Banking or our Mobile App to make a payment to a new payee using an Account name, BSB and Account number, Confirmation of Payee compares the details you’ve entered against the information held at the recipient’s bank
- You will receive one of six match outcomes: Match, Close Match, No Match, Account Closed, Account Not Found and Error
- This match outcome helps you make an informed decision on what to do next - whether that’s proceeding with the payment, stopping to double-check the details, or choosing not to make the payment
- When people make digital payments to you, they will also use Confirmation of Payee. The details they enter will be compared to the account information we hold for you.
What do the match outcomes mean?
Match outcomes explain whether the details you’ve entered are the same, or similar, to the details held by the recipient’s bank.
While the choice to continue with a payment is yours to make, it is important to be careful in circumstances where the payee is new or less familiar to you.
- The account details you entered match the details held by the recipient’s bank
- Added confidence that your money is heading where you want it to go.

- The account details you entered closely match the details held by the recipient’s bank
- Recheck the details you entered. If you get the same outcome, you can contact the payee to make sure they have provided the right details
- You can proceed with the payment if you choose; however, it may be difficult to retrieve funds if they are accidentally sent to the wrong account.

- The account details you entered do not match the details held by the recipient’s bank
- Recheck the details you entered. If you get the same outcome, you can contact the payee to make sure they have provided the right details
- You can proceed with the payment if you choose; however, it may be difficult to retrieve funds if they are accidentally sent to the wrong account.

- The recipient’s account is no longer active. Check details with your intended payee
- You will be unable to proceed with the payment.

- An account matching the details you entered could not be found. Check details with your intended payee
- You will be unable to proceed with the payment.

- The Confirmation of Payee service could not confirm or verify the account details you entered. Check details with your intended payee
- You can proceed with the payment if you choose; however, it may be difficult to retrieve funds if they are accidentally sent to the wrong account.
